I wrote this one in 1977. Finally got around to recording it seventeen years later. The first line originally had "a telegraph and a telephone" instead of "a fax machine and a cordless phone".
lyrics
I LOVE YOU
You’ve got a fax machine and a cordless phone
But still I’m feeling all alone
Because I can’t send the message I have deep in my heart
I sit up drinking late at night
Constantly thinking about what to write
I can end it with “I Love You” but I don’t know where to start
But words only seem to put boundaries on the thoughts I must express
And “I Love You” might mean going to bed or buying you a brand new dress
But Darling there’s something I’ve got say yeah something I must confess
I love you
I could write slow I could write it fast
I could put it first I could put it last
I could have it sneak up and take you by surprise
I could tell you kind of gradually
About all the things you mean to me
Or I could give it to you quick like a punch right between the eyes
But these words only seem to put boundaries on the thoughts I must express
And “I Love You” might mean going to bed or buying you a brand new dress
But Darling there’s something I’ve got say yeah something I must confess
I love you
In my attic apartment the door is locked
Me and Old Granddad about half-crocked
My vocabulary is dancing around in my brain in my head
Although I know it’s getting late
And I’m having trouble seeing straight
There’s gotta be a better way to get it all said
Words only seem to put boundaries on the thoughts I must express
And “I Love You” might mean going to bed or buying you a brand new dress
But Darling there’s something I’ve got say yeah something I must confess
I love you
I love you
Trey is one of my favorite songwriters, and the pickers he gathered together for this project take a bluegrass backseat to nobody...plus he cut one of my songs (but I'm not the least bit biased). Kurt Fortmeyer
